Overview
Microban is a roughly 30 cm humanoid with 19 XL330-M288-T servos and a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W. Its release includes printable CAD and build instructions, but the robot HAT is not described as an off-the-shelf purchase: the BOM directs builders to a separate Pollen Robotics design for fabrication. That board order is a material part of self-sourcing the robot; its exact design revision and manufacturing order still need confirmation before fabrication. [1] [5]

Microban v1.0.0 MuJoCo robot model. The Microban v1.0.0 MuJoCo robot model (src/model/mjcf/robot.xml at commit 0c814b4, generated with onshape-to-robot from the Onshape assembly of the author) at its reference pose: 20 bodies on the source body tree with the 19 hinge joints at zero, shown as 65 visual meshes (487,522 triangles, no decimation). The model places the printed parts together with purchased components modeled in the same file: 19 DYNAMIXEL XL330 servos (8 with horn, 11 without), servo horn and idle-cap dummies, M2 screws, a battery block and a switch. These are kept as modeled; their third-party terms are unknown. Collision primitives are not shown. The hardware design is licensed CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 (noncommercial, share-alike) and commercial use requires a separate license from the author; no commercial-use or manufacturing clearance is claimed. Fit, motion and fabrication are not verified.
Noncommercial license: the Microban cad/LICENSE file (Copyright 2026 Marc Duclusaud) states that “All files in this directory (STL and STEP files) are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)” and that “Commercial use requires prior written permission from the author.” The previewed model meshes are in src/model/mjcf, which the root LICENSE assigns to GPL-3.0 and whose robot.xml header states Apache-2.0; because they are generated from the Onshape hardware design, this preview applies the most restrictive terms, CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, with attribution to Marc Duclusaud, shared alike. Purchased components modeled in the file (DYNAMIXEL servos, horns, screws, battery, switch) have unknown third-party terms. No commercial-use, manufacturing or redistribution clearance is claimed. Earlier upstream estimates and vendor offers
Earlier estimates
No current, complete configuration-specific build cost has been established for this profile.
Treat the published budget as two estimates
The pinned BOM estimates about $567 for robot components and about $623 when the U2D2 and power hub used for configuration are included. These are upstream approximate figures, not checked supplier quotes. The HAT's quoted amount depends on fabricator and order quantity; location and availability also affect the parts prices. Tools, a suitable computer, shipping, taxes and labor still need an explicit scope before treating either number as a complete first-working cost. [5]
At US prices checked on October 4, 2026, the parts we could price add up to a known subtotal of USD 585.27. Most of it is the 19 XL330-M288-T servos: USD 27.49 each at ROBOTIS America, against the BOM's USD 23.90 at the ROBOTIS global store. The BOM's figures have stood since June 2026, but its links point to European and Korean stores, so they are not US offers. [5] [11]
Nine required items have no US price in that subtotal. The Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W was out of stock at all four US resellers we checked. The BOM's Amazon France links for the battery holder, battery management board and switch returned missing pages on Amazon US, and we found no other US offer for them. The robot HAT still needs a fabrication quote, and the screws and plain-bearing shims link to German and Chinese stores. The U2D2, power hub and 5 V supply needed to configure the motors add USD 65.16 outside the subtotal. A computer, a 3D printer, shipping and tax are also extra, and the battery wiring and connectors the assembly guide uses are not itemised in the BOM, so pricing the nine items would still not complete the budget. For printing, our slicing of the listed parts at the guide's settings gives about 290–430 g of PLA, one 1 kg spool for one successful set without reprints. The guide's part orientations are shown only as pictures, so the range runs from no supports with two walls to supports everywhere with three. [5] [10] [11]
The assembly guide starts with individual motor configuration in Dynamixel Wizard and an ID map. The configuration equipment includes a 5 V supply for the U2D2 power hub. Assembly also involves soldering splitter cables and battery electronics; re-crimping shortened cables is a recommended alternative to soldered joins. Mechanical and electrical assembly then proceed through the legs, torso and final build. Buying all 19 servos is therefore not the end of the actuator work. The documented setup and configuration tools should be part of any future build trial. [6]
Project notes
The source release and SD-card image are separate
This profile preserves source release v1.0.0. Its deployment guide links a separate image.v2 SD-card image for a card of at least 16 GB, followed by network setup and SSH-based deployment from a computer. The supplied Makefile synchronizes code and installs locked dependencies with uv. That image and the separate policy-training project are not part of the captured primary archive. [2] [7] [8]
Daily operation also has a specific shutdown requirement: stopping the control loop is different from shutting down the Pi before removing power. The usage guide distinguishes both actions and describes a locally runnable MuJoCo route. We have not reproduced the software setup, shutdown behavior or walking controller. [8]
CAD files use CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 and source code uses GPL v3. Documentation terms conflict: the README includes docs under the noncommercial license, while the root license assigns files outside cad/ to GPL v3. The separately sourced HAT needs its own license review. The README asks commercial hardware and kit suppliers to obtain a separate license. Keep the software and hardware terms distinct, and do not infer a commercially supportable robot from the source download alone. [1] [3] [9]
