Overview

RealSense SDK2, librealsense, provides depth/color streaming and calibration interfaces for supported RealSense cameras. Its README explicitly identifies the migration from IntelRealSense/librealsense to RealSenseAI/librealsense; these are the same project identity, not two catalog entries. The SDK source does not open the camera's manufacturing design or every firmware/closed extension. [1]

The README warns that master can include beta releases and points to the releases page for the last validated official release. Treat the reviewed commit as a source snapshot and match the actual camera/firmware support information before choosing a package. A recent branch or an example build does not establish compatibility with all cameras. [1]

For Ubuntu, the inspected distribution guide separates packaged installation from manual source/kernel integration. It lists packages for Ubuntu 20/22/24/26 and specific older release choices for end-of-life distributions, while its DKMS discussion identifies particular supported kernels. The distribution guide lists DKMS kernels 5.15, 5.19 and 6.5. The manual patch instructions separately list 5.15, 5.19, 6.5, 6.8, 6.11 and 6.14, plus an older-kernel route. An OS label alone is insufficient: check the selected device/kernel/SDK combination. The guide also describes the updated RealSenseAI package signing key. The manual guide initially says modified Linux drivers are required, but later qualifies patching as optional for newly released cameras lacking metadata support and says most cameras work with stock uvcvideo. The distribution guide recommends DKMS. No exact camera/firmware/SDK pairing was established, so those instructions do not prescribe a universal kernel change. No package repository, key or kernel module was installed here. [4] [5]

The packaged workflow distinguishes librealsense2-utils for demos/tools, librealsense2-dev for development headers and the symbolic link, and librealsense2-dkms for camera-specific kernel extensions. It then suggests reconnecting the camera and opening realsense-viewer. The capture example starts an SDK pipeline and waits for frames before rendering in an OpenGL window. That example needs a graphical environment; the manual guide lists GLFW, Mesa and GTK for OpenGL-enabled examples. For a host without OpenGL or X11, the guide instead builds textual examples with -DBUILD_EXAMPLES=true -DBUILD_GRAPHICAL_EXAMPLES=false. [3] [4] Those are concrete sources to inspect; a successful import or running window would not itself establish calibrated depth quality or actual frame delivery. [3] [5]

The SDK is Apache-2.0; this review does not establish applicable rights for every dependency, camera hardware, firmware or proprietary extension. Begin with the exact device/firmware/OS/kernel combination, then the selected installation and capture route. No SDK compilation, kernel patch, camera connection, frame capture, calibration measurement or performance test was performed. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Is this for you?

Known limitations
  • IntelRealSense/librealsense is the prior identity, now redirected to RealSenseAI; no duplicate entry.
  • Master may contain beta releases; pinned source is not automatically the last validated release.
  • Apache2 SDK does not open camera hardware, proprietary extensions or all firmware; no camera capture/calibration tested.
  • Manual guide has modified-driver requirement versus later stock-kernel qualification; distribution guide recommends DKMS. Exact camera/firmware/kernel/SDK pairing remains unestablished.

Editorial assessment of bounded source evidence; no runtime, fit, manufacturing or compatibility proof.

  • Inspect the pinned implementation and select the exact configuration described in the article.
  • Follow the chosen upstream environment/build route, resolving the listed dependencies before runtime or hardware integration.

Installation

Select the device/firmware/OS/kernel combination first. Ubuntu package instructions distinguish librealsense2-utils, librealsense2-dev and librealsense2-dkms; manual source/patch guidance is a separate, qualified route. No package/kernel change performed.

Source-reported requirement/configuration, not a tested installation, compatibility matrix or measured runtime result.

Supported hardware
  • Supported RealSense camera models as declared upstream; exact device/firmware/release match required.

Source-reported requirement/configuration, not a tested installation, compatibility matrix or measured runtime result.
