Overview

Ouster SDK supplies sensor-client, configuration and visualization-related code for Ouster lidar workflows. The repository explicitly moves its ROS driver to ouster-ros; choosing the SDK is therefore different from installing a ROS node. Its source is useful for investigating the sensor interface, not for establishing open lidar hardware. [1]

Is this for you?

Known limitations
  • ROSdriver is a separate repository; SDKinstallation doesnotinstall or validate a ROS integration.
  • Binarydependency licenses and actualsensorconfiguration/UDP behavior require separate checks.

Editorial assessment of cited source; no runtime or hardware test.

What you need

Dependencies
  • Pythonpackage ouster-sdk; C++core/source build is a separate route
  • Matched Ouster sensor/network configuration and source type

Installation & first result

Open the upstream getting-started guide [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

  • Select the named hardware/model and corresponding source configuration before installation.
  • Follow the cited starting route while keeping package, device and firmware versions matched; no operation reproduced here.

Installation

README python3 -m pip install ouster-sdk; unpinned package may differ from reviewed source. SDK route is distinct from separate ouster-ros driver.

Upstream documented requirement/configuration only, not independently tested installation or compatibility.

Project notes

Choose the interface before configuring a sensor

The README documents python3 -m pip install ouster-sdk, with a separate upgrade command. An unpinned package need not match this source snapshot, and the selected evidence does not establish a minimum Python version or a tested host/firmware pair. Inspect the installed release and the intended source route before expecting a live sensor or saved capture to work. No package was installed here. [1]

The selected Python source_sensor plugin implements the sensor-source route, while the C++ client source contains the sensor communication/configuration implementation. The configuration handler's -d option reads current configuration. Calling that handler without configuration options or values instead applies defaults: automatic UDP destination, lidar/IMU ports 7502/7503, full azimuth window, signal_multiplier 1 and NORMAL operating mode. Inspect the sensor hostname and intended settings before that write; -p separately requests persistence. These are source-inspected behaviors, not commands executed here. Source implementation does not prove that host networking, packet receipt or a particular sensor firmware works in the intended deployment. No sensor, UDP session, capture or viewer was exercised. Keep source and distributed dependency terms separate

The root source notice is BSD-3-Clause. LICENSE-bin separately lists software that binary distributions may include, including Eigen, GLFW and jsoncons with their own licenses. A BSD source label is not a blanket grant for every linked binary dependency, sensor firmware or captured recording. [2] [3]

A bounded first investigation is the chosen sensor-source and client configuration, followed by a matched release/device test in the reader's own environment. The README's external SDK documentation and separate ROS repository are next sources to inspect; this review did not reproduce their full setup, throughput or calibration. [1] [4] [5]

What we checked

Pinned documentation/selected source review only; no build, installation, live device/network, simulator, calibration or performance test.

  • Requirements: operating system, host computer
  • Version-specific hardware compatibility (ecosystem tags alone do not establish it)
