Overview
Robot simulation environment with a scene editor, sample worlds and controller APIs; reviewed at R2025a with release-specific graphics requirements and asset licensing. [S001]
Webots combines a scene editor, robot models and controller APIs in one simulation environment. The reviewed R2025a release is a useful entry point for learning how a controller interacts with sensors and actuators. Its first tutorial builds an arena, adds a simulated e-puck and attaches a program that moves the robot; it does not require purchasing the physical e-puck. [S001] [S002] [S008]

Installation and use
Match the release to the computer
The R2025a documentation lists Ubuntu 22.04/24.04 on x86-64, Windows 10/11 in 64-bit editions, and macOS 12/13/14. These are the requirements of the pinned release, not a current-platform compatibility promise. Precompiled releases provide a starting route; controller languages can need an additional runtime or toolchain. C, C++, Python, Java and MATLAB examples are documented. [S001] [S005] [S006] [S009]
Graphics support deserves a check before choosing a classroom or lab computer. The documented minimum includes a 2 GHz dual-core CPU, 2 GB of RAM and OpenGL 3.3 graphics with 512 MB of graphics memory. The guide recommends a quad-core CPU and, on Linux, NVIDIA graphics; it warns that other adapters and drivers can have rendering problems. Those specifications are upstream guidance, not performance measurements for a particular world. No installation or simulation was run for this review. [S005]
Keep the world and controller together
A WBT world defines the initial scene, including objects and physical properties. The tutorial creates it inside a project's worlds directory. The scene tree exposes nodes and fields for editing, while the controller program supplies the robot's behavior. Preserve both when sharing an experiment: a moving robot on screen is not enough information to reconstruct its setup. [S008] [S009]
The controller guide's step function synchronizes the program with simulation. A 32-millisecond step refers to simulated time; the real time required depends on the world. Sensors also have to be enabled before their values can be used, and their readings update through simulation steps. These details matter when a program appears to run but reads no useful sensor data, or when a simulated loop is mistaken for a real-time control benchmark. [S009]
Begin with the tutorial's arena and robot, confirm that the assigned controller advances the simulation, then add the sensors or environmental complexity needed for your question. This is an editorial starting sequence based on the upstream tutorial, not a tested exercise from this publication. For an older project, consult the intervening upgrade instructions: the migration guide says to apply required transitions in order. [S008] [S009] [S010]
Check the model's license as well
Webots source code is Apache-2.0. The license guide separately describes sample worlds, controllers and models: most sample source files carry Apache headers, some robot/object PROTO assets use the Webots Assets license, and some contributions use other terms. Check the actual files or folders selected for a project before redistributing them. The simulator's root license is not a blanket grant for every bundled or externally obtained asset. [S003] [S007]
This profile covers the simulation environment and documented workflow. It does not establish physical accuracy, robot transfer, a tested ROS integration or a workload-specific compute budget.
Source files and licenses
Open simulator source with documented workflow; sample asset and dependency licenses must be checked individually.
