Overview

Artichoke V1.2 is historical Open Bionics hand-control firmware for Almond/ATmega2560 systems. It adds serial, EMG and HANDle/Nunchuck input modes and depends on separate FingerLib low-level finger control. This is a distinct firmware contribution, not another complete ADA hand or a proven modern controller/hardware pairing. [1] [2]

The README describes serial communication at 38400 baud and entering ? to inspect available commands. It distinguishes built-in ADC from an optional external I2C ADC for muscle sensing. Select that input configuration, the actual hand/controller and compatible FingerLib before copying a mode example. The selected source does not establish a current complete installation or flashing recipe. [1] [2]

The inspected EMGControl.cpp contains actual noise-floor buffers, signal sampling and peak/hold analysis before grip control. Its conditional compilation selects analogRead or external ADC input. These are algorithm/configuration details, not observed sensor quality, calibrated thresholds or a successful finger action. Inspect NUM_EMG_CHANNELS and USE_I2C_ADC: standard one-channel EMG toggles direction, whereas two-channel control assigns separate open/close triggers. The external ADC path additionally requires I2C_ADC.h, and HANDle control is gated by HANDLE_EN. These are source-defined configuration choices, not validated definitions or observed operation; match them and the calibration assumptions before adapting the firmware. [2] [4]

Release notes also describe PWM timer changes and a custom delay implementation. That matters when combining the firmware with other Arduino code or libraries: nominal Arduino compatibility does not validate shared timing assumptions. No dependency environment, firmware build, upload or timer behavior was tested here. [1]

The firmware carries CC-BY-SA-4.0, separate from external library terms and the rights of physical actuators, sensors and hand designs. Begin with the exact historical stack and one input mode, inspect its implementation, then resolve firmware/tooling and calibration requirements. No EMG recording, force/position calibration, grasp, physical finger motion or medical suitability was established. [1] [4]

Is this for you?

Known limitations
  • CC-BY-SA4 firmware notice is distinct from hardware and external library terms.
  • Serial/EMG examples do not establish calibrated sensing or safe physical finger motion.
  • Historical timer/delay changes and library versions not reproduced; no current complete installation or board pairing validated.

Editorial assessment of bounded source evidence; no runtime, fit, manufacturing or compatibility proof.

Installation

README source setup requires separate FingerLib.h for the historical Almond/ATmega2560 hand firmware. ADC/input gates and library versions must match; a complete current build/upload recipe is not established.

Source-reported prerequisite/configuration only; no reproduced install, validated platform matrix or measured runtime proof.
